CEMA C Rubber Disc Return Idlers – Medium-Duty Self-Cleaning Return Rollers, 4" & 5" Diameter

ZOOMRY CEMA C rubber disc return idlers feature alternating rubber discs along the roller length for self-cleaning return side operation. Engineered to CEMA C standards for mining and industrial conveyors up to 42-inch belt width, these return idlers prevent sticky material buildup on return rollers in coal, clay, and overburden applications. The rubber discs shed accumulated carryback as the roller rotates, maintaining a consistent roller diameter and preventing belt mistracking. Available with 4-inch and 5-inch diameter rollers and labyrinth seals.

1. Product Overview

ZOOMRY CEMA C rubber disc return idlers feature alternating rubber discs mounted along the roller length for self-cleaning return side operation. Engineered to CEMA C standards for mining and bulk material handling conveyors up to 42-inch belt width, these return idlers prevent sticky material buildup on the return roller surface. As the roller rotates, the rubber discs shed accumulated carryback — maintaining a consistent roller diameter and preventing the irregular wear that causes belt mistracking. Available with 4-inch and 5-inch diameter rollers and labyrinth seals.

Rubber disc return idlers are the preferred solution for conveyors handling sticky or hygroscopic materials — coal, clay, overburden, potash, and wet limestone — where standard flat return rollers accumulate material that hardens into uneven deposits. These deposits change the effective roller diameter, causing the return belt to track erratically and wear unevenly. The rubber disc design eliminates this problem without water spray or manual cleaning.

2. How Rubber Disc Self-Cleaning Works

On the return side of a belt conveyor, the belt travels with its clean side in contact with the rollers — but fine particles, moisture, and dust inevitably migrate to the return side through belt edge gaps and splice points. For most dry, free-flowing materials, standard flat return rollers handle this without issue. But for sticky materials, each revolution deposits a thin layer of carryback onto the roller surface.

Over hours of operation, this layer builds into an uneven coating that changes the effective roller diameter at different points along its length. The belt begins to track erratically, edge wear accelerates, and the roller bearings experience unbalanced loading. The CEMA C rubber disc return idler solves this passively: alternating rubber discs create gaps along the roller where accumulated material simply falls away as the roller turns. The discs themselves flex slightly during rotation, cracking off any material that does adhere. The result is a consistently clean roller surface with zero water consumption and zero manual cleaning — ideal for unattended conveyor sections.

3. Key Features

Alternating Rubber Disc Design — Rubber discs spaced along the roller length create gaps where carryback falls away during rotation, maintaining a consistent roller diameter and preventing the buildup that causes belt mistracking in coal and clay handling applications.

Passive Self-Cleaning — No water spray, no scrapers, no manual intervention — the rubber discs flex during rotation, naturally shedding accumulated material without external power or consumables.

CEMA C Medium-Duty Rating — 4-inch and 5-inch diameter rollers engineered for belt widths up to 42 inches — suitable for medium-duty return sections in cement and aggregate conveyors.

Extended Bearing Life — By preventing unbalanced roller loading caused by uneven material deposits, rubber disc idlers help protect bearings from the eccentric forces that accelerate wear in standard flat return rollers.

Advanced Labyrinth Sealing — Multi-stage seals protect bearings from dust and moisture ingress common in mining and bulk material handling environments.

4. Rubber Disc Return vs Standard Return

Feature CEMA C Rubber Disc Return (C5) CEMA C Standard Return (C7)
Roller Surface Alternating rubber discs on steel shell Smooth steel shell
Self-Cleaning Yes — passive disc flex shedding No — buildup must be cleaned manually
Material Suitability Sticky, wet, hygroscopic materials Dry, free-flowing materials
Belt Tracking Stability Consistent — no diameter changes from buildup Degrades over time as buildup accumulates
Best For Coal, clay, overburden, potash, wet limestone Dry aggregates, sand, gravel

5. Dimensions – CEMA C Rubber Disc Return Idlers

ZOOMRY CEMA C rubber disc return idlers are manufactured with 4-inch and 5-inch diameter configurations for belt widths from 18 to 42 inches. Suitable for medium-duty CEMA C return sections in mining, coal, cement, and aggregate conveyors:

BW A B L 4" H 5" H
18 27 29 21 5 1/4 6 1/4
24 33 35 27 5 1/4 6 1/4
30 39 41 33 5 1/4 6 1/4
36 45 47 39 5 1/4 6 1/4
42 51 53 45 5 1/4 6 1/4

Dimensions per CEMA C industry standards. BW=Belt width, A=Frame width, B=Overall width, L=Roller length (including rubber discs), H=Center height above mounting base. Rubber disc diameter is approximately 1–2 inches larger than the steel shell diameter. All dimensions in inches.

What Information Do We Need for Return Idler Selection?

  • Belt width, conveyor length, and belt speed
  • Material type, moisture content, and stickiness characteristics
  • Current return roller condition — buildup severity and cleaning frequency
  • Operating environment — dust levels, temperature range, and washdown requirements
  • Existing idler type, frame dimensions, and whether this is a retrofit or new installation
