Jiujiang Port Ship Unloading Conveyor System

Project Overview

Project Location Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China
Year Completed 2011
Equipment Quantity 5 Sets of belt conveyors
Capacity 2,200 t/h
Belt Width 1,400 mm
Availability Rate 99.2% (12+ Years)

Project Background

Jiujiang Port, located on the Yangtze River, is a key hub for bulk material transshipment in Central China. With the rapid growth of regional industries including coal, cement, and steel, the port faced increasing pressure to handle bulk cargo efficiently. The existing ship unloading process relied on cranes and trucks, which limited throughput to below 1,500 t/h and caused serious dust emissions exceeding 25 mg/m³. Port operators needed a continuous, high-capacity ship unloading conveyor system to reduce vessel turnaround time and comply with stricter environmental regulations.

Project Requirements

The client required a fully integrated ship unloading and conveying solution with the following specifications:

  • Capacity: ≥ 2,200 t/h continuous operation
  • Material: Coal, iron ore, and clinker (particle size 0–50 mm)
  • Belt width: 1,400 mm
  • Number of conveyors: 5 units (to connect from dockside hopper to stockyard)
  • Environmental compliance: Dust emission ≤ 10 mg/m³
  • Reliability: 24/7 operation, easy maintenance

ZOOMRY's Customized Solution

Core Equipment – 5 Sets of Belt Conveyors

ZOOMRY designed and supplied a complete ship unloading conveying system consisting of 5 belt conveyors (total length approximately 1.2 km), each with the following features:

  • Belt width: 1,400 mm (heavy-duty, suitable for high‑capacity bulk flow)
  • Belt speed: 3.15 m/s
  • Drive power: 2 × 315 kW (dual drive at the head section for stable starting)
  • Idler sets: ZOOMRY's low‑resistance idlers (diameter 159 mm, rotational resistance ≤ 2.5 N)
  • impact beds: Installed at feed points with impact beds to absorb shock from ship unloader chute
  • Belt Cleaners: Dual PU belt cleaners at head and tail (cleaning efficiency ≥ 95%)

Supporting Infrastructure

The system was integrated with a mobile ship unloader (provided by the port) via a receiving hopper with a vibrating feeder to ensure uniform material flow. ZOOMRY also supplied walkways, safety guards, and a central control panel for remote operation. All structural components were treated with anti-corrosion coatings to withstand the humid Yangtze River environment, and Conveyor Pulleys were manufactured with 40Cr forged material for extended service life.

Dust Control

To meet environmental standards, each conveyor was fully enclosed with steel covers, and dust extraction points were installed at transfer chutes. The measured dust concentration during operation was consistently ≤ 8 mg/m³ — well below the 10 mg/m³ regulatory requirement. This not only ensured compliance but also significantly improved the working environment for port personnel.

Implementation Process

Design & Manufacturing

ZOOMRY's engineering team conducted on‑site surveys to align the conveyor layout with the existing dock structure. All 5 conveyors were manufactured at ZOOMRY's Hebei factory under ISO 9001 standards. Key components — including drums, idlers, and belts — were pre‑assembled and tested before shipment.

Installation & Commissioning

Installation was completed in 45 days with a 10‑person crew. The conveyors were assembled in sections, and the belt splicing was done using vulcanization. After a 72‑hour load test, the system achieved a stable capacity of 2,250 t/h, exceeding the requirement of 2,200 t/h.

Training & After‑Sales

ZOOMRY provided on‑site training for 12 port maintenance personnel, covering daily inspection, belt tracking, and emergency procedures. A spare parts kit — including idlers, scrapers, and sensors — was delivered within 7 days' notice. ZOOMRY's domestic service network ensures that common spare parts remain readily available, minimizing potential downtime.

Project Outcomes

  • Efficiency gain: Vessel unloading time reduced from 28 hours to 18 hours (for a 50,000 DWT ship), increasing berth turnover by 35%.
  • Environmental compliance: Dust emissions dropped from 25 mg/m³ to 7.5 mg/m³, avoiding penalties and community complaints.
  • Reliability: The belt conveyors have operated for over 12 years with only routine maintenance, achieving an availability rate of 99.2%.
  • Cost savings: Compared to the previous truck‑based system, energy and labor costs decreased by 40%.

Client Testimonial

"ZOOMRY's 5 conveyor system has been the backbone of our ship unloading operation for over a decade. The capacity and durability have exceeded our expectations, and their local spare parts support keeps downtime to a minimum. We have since ordered two more conveyors for our expansion." – Port Operations Manager, Jiujiang Port
