The idler's function is to support the belt and the material being conveyed, preventing sagging and misalignment due to the weight of the belt and material. It neither receives nor transmits power, providing only support and guidance.

Drive rollers are typically single-piece structures with large diameters (commonly 630mm, 800mm, or even larger), thicker walls, and heavier shafts to withstand high torque and bending stress. Their surfaces require lagging to increase friction, and the bearing housings are often split-type for easier maintenance and replacement.

Idlers are usually composed of multiple rollers forming an "idler set." For example, a troughing idler set typically consists of three rollers arranged at angles of 20°, 35°, or 45° to form a trough-shaped support surface, allowing the belt to carry more material. Idler diameters are relatively smaller (commonly 89mm, 108mm, 133mm, 159mm, etc.), with simpler structures focused on rotational resistance, sealing performance, and service life.
