Radial Conveyor – Complete Guide to Radial Stackers for Bulk Material Stockpiling | ZOOMRY

A radial conveyor — also known as a radial stacker or radial telescopic conveyor — is a bulk material handling machine that rotates horizontally around a fixed pivot point to build large, crescent-shaped stockpiles without repositioning the entire machine. It is the most efficient equipment for creating high-volume storage piles in ports, mines, quarries, and cement plants.

Unlike fixed conveyors that discharge material in a single straight line, a radial conveyor slews through an arc — typically 90° to 360° depending on the model — multiplying the stockpile capacity from a single feed point by 3× to 5×. This radial movement, combined with a telescopic boom and luffing (vertical angle adjustment), allows one machine to cover an entire storage yard without the fuel, labor, and maintenance costs of mobile equipment like wheel loaders.

How a Radial Conveyor Works

The defining feature of a radial conveyor is its pivot-mounted undercarriage. The entire conveyor structure — feed hopper, truss frame, belt, and discharge boom — rotates around a fixed tail-end pivot point. Material feeds into the tail section from a fixed upstream source (such as a crusher, screen, or feed conveyor), and the radial movement of the discharge end spreads material in a wide arc. When combined with a telescopic boom, the machine can also extend and retract to vary the discharge radius, creating layered, compacted-free stockpiles.

There are three primary types of radial conveyors, each suited to different operational needs:

Fixed Radial Stacker

The fixed radial stacker is permanently installed at a dedicated stockyard. It offers the highest structural stability and capacity — typically 450 to 2,400 m³/h with boom lengths up to 58 meters. Its semi-permanent foundation allows heavier construction and higher stacking heights (up to 20 meters), making it the preferred choice for high-volume mine and cement plant stockyards where the feed source location does not change.

Wheeled Radial Stacker

Wheeled radial stackers mount the pivot and conveyor structure on solid rubber tires, enabling rapid relocation between stockpile zones. They are ideal for ports and aggregate operations where stockpile locations shift seasonally. A single operator can tow a wheeled unit to a new feed position in under 30 minutes — eliminating the need for multiple fixed conveyors across the yard.

Tracked Radial Stacker

Tracked radial stackers provide the ultimate in on-site mobility. Crawler tracks distribute ground pressure to less than 0.08 MPa — allowing operation on soft, unpaved quarry floors and heap leach pads where wheeled equipment would bog down. Tracked models are self-propelled with onboard diesel power, requiring no towing vehicle and enabling 360° radial operation from any position.

Radial Conveyor Applications by Industry

Choosing the right radial conveyor depends on your material, throughput, and site conditions. The table below summarizes the recommended type for each industry:

Industry Material Recommended Type Typical Capacity
Mining Iron ore, copper, gold ore Fixed or Tracked Radial 1,500–2,400 t/h
Quarry & Aggregates Sand, gravel, crushed stone Wheeled or Tracked Radial 500–1,500 t/h
Cement & Clinker Limestone, clinker, gypsum Fixed Radial Telescopic 800–2,000 t/h
Ports & Terminals Coal, grain, fertilizers Wheeled Radial 800–1,800 t/h
Heap Leaching Crushed ore (gold, copper) Tracked Radial 500–1,200 t/h

Recommended Radial Conveyor Equipment

ZOOMRY manufactures a complete range of radial stackers for every industry and application:

Fixed Radial Telescopic Stacking Conveyor

The highest-capacity radial stacker — 450 to 2,400 m³/h with boom lengths up to 58 meters. 360° radial slewing, hydraulic telescopic boom, and optional PLC automation for layered stacking. Ideal for permanent mine and cement stockyards.

Why Choose ZOOMRY Radial Conveyors

  • Complete Range Coverage: Fixed, wheeled, and tracked radial stackers — one manufacturer for every site condition from permanent stockyards to mobile quarry operations.
  • Layered Stacking Technology: PLC-controlled automatic stacking programs (herringbone and circular modes) eliminate material segregation and degradation — critical for maintaining product quality in aggregates and ores.
  • Heavy-Duty Components: Independently manufactured Conveyor idlers with 50,000+ hour service life and 40Cr forged pulleys with diamond-patterned rubber coating (friction coefficient ≥0.4).
  • Dust Control Ready: Optional dust suppression systems, enclosed transfer points, and Rain Covers ensure compliance with environmental regulations in ports, mines, and urban quarry operations.

Case Study

Guizhou Mobile Stacker Coal Stockpiling — China

A Guizhou open-pit coal facility replaced its fixed stacker with ZOOMRY's ZR120SF radial telescopic stacker, increasing inventory capacity from 60,000 to 85,000 tons — a 28% improvement. The radial rotation (±120°) and telescopic reach (10–22m) cover the entire 54-meter stockpiling area, while sealed conveyor covers and dust suppression chutes reduced emissions from 22 mg/m³ to 8 mg/m³.
